Artist Statement

In my artwork, I explore themes of culture and mental health, revealing the struggles associated with cultural identity and self-worth. I use the human form and water as central motifs to depict scenes that convey inner pain.

Drawing from my personal experiences, I channel my past struggles with severe depression to create pieces that raise awareness of the challenges in overcoming this condition. My work aims to reveal the hidden voices of those who suffer in silence. Severe depression manifests as two conflicting voices within us: one that cries out for help in pain and another that remains silent, fostering suffering and a desire for it to end.

Growing up enveloped in American, Mexican, and Guatemalan cultures, I often felt lost in my search for belonging. Although I was born and raised in the United States and identify as American, I have frequently felt like an immigrant, almost an outcast who doesn’t belong. Like Frida Kahlo, who was so poetic at expressing her pain through her art, I strive to articulate my love and anguish for life and culture in a meaningful and striking way. Through vibrant colors and woeful expressions, I use symbols from my cultures to illustrate the interconnectedness of our cultures within society, even though acceptance for their actual people remains elusive.

My goal is to bridge the gap in understanding how mental health issues, such as depression, impact us and how differently individuals manage and recover from these struggles. I seek to provoke conversations about cultural acceptance and challenge society to reflect on how truly inclusive we are of diverse cultures and their people.
